Vehicle Fire Cause and Origin Investigation

A burned vehicle is a contained scene with a documentable parts inventory. Every component had a designed location and a designed function. The sequence you follow determines what the examination produces. Work the same order every time and the record holds up later.

Document Before Anything Moves

Photograph the vehicle as found, from all four sides and all four corners, before any hands touch it. Then work quadrant by quadrant, then component by component. Repeat the sequence after each layer of disassembly. Every photo ties to a log entry and a sketch position.

Tow damage and recovery damage get mistaken for fire damage. Record whether the vehicle was moved, by whom, and from where. Get the tow operator's account of how it was hooked and loaded.

  • Final rest position, heading, and relationship to fixed objects
  • Positions of doors, windows, hood, trunk, and hatch before anyone opens them
  • Ignition switch position, key location, and gear selector position
  • Odometer, fuel gauge, and warning lamp condition where the cluster survives
  • Tire and wheel condition at all four corners
  • Suppression activity, including forcible entry points and where streams were applied

Vehicle History, Recalls, and Prior Repairs

Pull the VIN from more than one location. Dash plate, door jamb label, and stamped locations on the body or frame give redundancy when one is destroyed. Run the VIN against the NHTSA recall database and check for manufacturer service bulletins covering the fire area.

Pull the service history. Recent work on fuel lines, wiring, or the battery places recent human contact at a candidate ignition source. Identify the shop and the date of the work where the record supports it.

  • When was the vehicle last serviced, and by which shop
  • Were any open recalls unaddressed at the time of the fire
  • Any recent work on fuel, electrical, exhaust, or aftermarket accessories
  • Warning lights, smells, or intermittent electrical faults in the preceding weeks
  • Who had access to the keys, and how many keys exist
  • Was the vehicle driven that day, or parked for an extended period
  • Loan status, insurance coverage, and whether the vehicle was listed for sale

Exterior and Undercarriage

Walk a full circuit and establish exterior burn patterns before opening anything. Note glass condition and where it fell. Note paint loss, panel deformation, and the vertical extent of damage on each side. Compare left to right and front to rear on symmetrical components.

Raise the vehicle. Examine the undercarriage directly. Trace fuel and brake lines end to end. Inspect exhaust components, heat shields, transmission and differential seals, and the drive line. Record penetration through the floor pan. Record the presence and location of melted aluminum as an observation, with the component identified and its position fixed on the sketch.

Engine Compartment

Disassemble in layers and photograph each layer before removal. Document the battery and cables in place, including whether terminals were connected. Follow harness routing through grommets and along brackets, and mark chafe points against sheet metal.

Identify every hot surface and every potential leak path above or beside it. Exhaust manifold, turbocharger housing, and catalytic converter sit in that category. Check the fuel rail, injectors, supply and return connections, hoses, and clamps for a pressurized spray path. Alternator, starter, junction box, fuse blocks, and relay carriers come out one at a time with an identifier attached.

Passenger Compartment and Cargo Area

Inventory the contents before removing anything. Missing personal property, absent child seats, or a stripped interior belong in the record. Examine seat frames and springs, headliner remnants, carpet and padding, console, HVAC housing, and the instrument cluster.

Aftermarket wiring deserves separate attention. Chargers, audio amplifiers, remote start modules, and accessory taps frequently bypass factory circuit protection. Trace each one to its source. Sample irregular patterns on the floor and collect comparison samples from unburned areas of the same material. Full compartment involvement produces similar patterns. The laboratory result decides it.

Fuel, Exhaust, and Electrical Systems

Work each system end to end and record its condition against the design. The systems overlap in the engine compartment and along the undercarriage. Document position and routing before removal.

Arc mapping has limits in a small compartment with heavy damage. Collapsed harness routing, multiple candidate arc sites, and component movement during suppression all reduce what a survey supports. Record arc site locations as observations and weigh them against the rest of the file.

  • Electrical: battery state and terminal connection, main harness routing, fuse and relay assemblies, aftermarket splices, and arc site locations
  • Fuel: tank integrity, filler neck and vent lines, pump access panel, line connections at the rail and filter, clamp condition, fuel level, and cap position
  • Exhaust: manifold and turbocharger surfaces, converter condition, missing or displaced heat shields, and contact with combustible material including road debris and undercoating
  • High voltage systems: orange cabling, pack condition, and evidence of thermal runaway. Treat stranded energy as a live hazard and plan for reignition during storage
  • Document each system as intact, damaged, or absent. Absence of a component is data

Running Fires and Parked Fires

The distinction shapes the ignition sequence you test. Establish it early. Support it with physical evidence. The reporting party's summary is a statement to verify.

Weigh the items below as a group. No single item on this list establishes the classification. Several are consistent with more than one scenario, including a staged fire, and several can be arranged.

Telematics units, infotainment modules, and event data recorders may retain useful data. Preserve them before disassembly and use a qualified download.

  • Running indicators: debris, molten drips, or scorch marks along the roadway leading to the rest position
  • Running indicators: damage concentrated in the engine compartment or along the undercarriage
  • Running indicators: selector out of park, key in the run position, doors open, occupants clear of the vehicle
  • Parked indicators: vehicle squared in a space or driveway with the selector in park
  • Parked indicators: doors and windows secured, glass fallen inside the vehicle footprint
  • Parked indicators: damage concentrated in the passenger compartment or at a single interior area
  • Parked indicators: dormancy supported by owner statements, telematics, or parking records

Total Burns and Component Recovery

When the vehicle is consumed, fewer surfaces survive to carry directional indicators. Work from the least damaged area toward the most damaged. Compare symmetrical components side to side. Track penetration through the floor pan and firewall. Use relative survival of components as one indicator among several.

Identify interested parties before any destructive step. Send notice and hold a joint examination where product liability or subrogation is plausible. Record what was moved, when, and by whom.

  • Photograph each component in place, then again after removal, with an identifier
  • Record recovery location on a sketch keyed to the photo log
  • Package wiring and metal components dry and rigid, without cleaning
  • Use clean unlined metal cans or approved vapor tight containers for suspected ignitable liquid samples
  • Collect comparison samples from unburned areas of the same material
  • Maintain chain of custody from recovery through laboratory intake
  • Submit liquid samples to an accredited laboratory for gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis

Keeping the Determination Defensible

The determination rests on collected data, a stated hypothesis, and testing that hypothesis against the data. State the origin area at the level of confidence the evidence supports. Undetermined is a valid finding.

Origin, cause, and classification belong to the certified investigator under NFPA 1033. The report documents how the investigator reached them.

  • Separate observation from interpretation throughout the report
  • Show which hypotheses were considered and how each was tested
  • Identify the data that would have changed the conclusion
  • State every limitation: scene disturbance, tow damage, missing components, delayed notification
  • Keep the photo log, sketch, and evidence inventory consistent with the narrative
  • Submit the file for peer review before release
